Aloha,
My OS is Win98se and my browser is Netscape 7.2. After a bad shutdown last night, it won't boot up this morning. The POST check goes ok but then Scandisk comes on but there is no yellow progress bar on the bottom. There is just a line and it sits there and does nothing, then after a long while it goes to D: and the same thing happens. It will not pass there so no, Windows. I tried safe booting, but it just hangs at scandisk again and does nothing. I went into the dos prompt and ran scandisk and it seems to work. Is there another way to bypass scandisk and get to windows? I can access my c: drive from the dos prompt and it looks like all the files are there so maybe windows got corrupted somehow (or maybe the hdd??). I also used my windows startup floppy and am able to access the windows cd disk but am hesitant about installing it. Will it wipe out my existing Netscape mail files, accounts, bookmarks etc or is there a way to reinstall Win98se without affecting anything?? TIA

Mahalo,
doogdoog

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i kapono..

I mean, press x when scandisk starts. See if that gets you past it.

Try starting the PC with a boot floppy.

At the A:\ prompt type:

C: (press Enter)

Now type:

ATTRIB -R -H -S MSDOS.SYS (note the spaces, press Enter)

Now type:

EDIT MSDOS.SYS (press Enter)

Locate this entry and edit accordingly but do not change anything else:

[Options]
AutoScan=0

Save and exit. Now type:

ATTRIB +R +H +S MSDOS.SYS (note the spaces, press Enter)

Restart the PC without the floppy.

See if that works.
