I updated my pc and noticed Windows ME blue screens if I don't use the 512 in system.ini file. Yes I know most people say windows me sucks but not all of my programs are not xp compatable and it works for me.
This has allot of programming software installed so I did a test. Since I have a dual boot system, I went into XP and renamed the windows and program files dir of windows me on drive C. I rebooted to a floppy disk and did a fresh install of windows me and it showed 1gb of ram in system info and ran fine. I ran it though a variety of tests and and it proved to be stable. I backed up the windows and program files dir so I could reuse it or use it as a fresh install again if needed. Now why would the original install of windows me(used the same install files) crash if the 512MB isn't in the system.ini file? I have done some research and read that the Vmm files were created during install. I tried using the Vmm files from the working 1gb ram install but it didn't correct it. I also used the same information in the new install as the original install such as name,password etc. Since the original windows install was done on another motherboard I realize references to the old motherboard still exist in the registry. Also since it would take a week or 2 to reinstall all the programming software, that is to time consuming. I remember filling in for our IT guy when he went on vacation(neither I or him are there anymore) he used a way to export the software parts of the registry and import them into a fresh install and bypass reinstalling programs. I saw him do it a few times but don't remember which Hive's he used.

So I either need to figure out how to get the current windows me to work with 1 gb or export the software hives needed to import & test on the working 1gb install.

Does anybody know the answer to either of these questions?
