Just wonder if CHKDSK is the same as Defrag that we need to run when you delete a lot of file/program?

Do i need to run CHKDSK manually (even though there's no error or problem) or let it run automatically when it detect problem in your Hard disk?

Thanks

Chkdsk ran automatically and broke my install of vista. Changed a bunch of security ID's.

Sorry to hijack the topic, but anyways, drawing upon what I've heard, sectors in the HD need 20 bytes at the end for security info. Why would some sectors on the HD have less than 20 bytes (and hence, chkdsk erasing any data on a sector with less than 20 bytes at the end).

CHKDSK is a command in DOS and Microsoft Windows system which verifies hard disk or floppy disk for file system integrity. It is similar to fsck command in UNIX. Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, CHKDSK can also check disk surface for bad sectors, the task previously done by SCANDISK. CHKDSK can also fix errors.

Defrag Is a process (run by a defragging program) whereby parts of data files on all segments of a computer hard disk are taken from their fragmented state (with parts of files spread all over the disk), and grouped together in complete-file segments. This makes it quicker for applications to find the files they need and frees up disk space, making the computer run more efficiently.

The answer is no it is not a part of regular maintenance like defragmenter is. It is strictly a utility for trouble shooting when you have issues.
