To my view, the learning curve will be harder the more you know the application. This is probably a very obvious thing to say, but there it is.
What I mean is, as power users, we know what we want, and where it used to be, but can't find it in the new UI. For a brand new user, though, the UI is far more logical. I think MS actually did a fairly good job of making it more accessible for new and relatively inexperienced users. They'll be able to get up to speed quicker, as the most used items (for many) are up front and centre, not buried like they used to be.
I agree on the customization aspects though.
