Save and maintain the files as RTF.

They "should" be interchangeable between WP and Word.

Why don't you ask your employer to have Word installed for you?
Explain how inconvenient it is to be unable to print your personal documents at their cost . . .

Sending things to & from work as .rtf would work fine.

If Wordpad (the free wordprocessor that comes with Windows) will open Word files; however, it won't save in Word format (although it will save in .rtf).

I'm assuming that you can't install your own software at work- but OpenOffice will read both Word and WordPerfect files; it will also save in Word format to take home.
