I'm having problems in a windows 2000 network, its a very simple layout with only 5 computers and a server, the internet comes in and is redistributed through a dlink 10/100 fast ethernet switch.

The internet is up on 2 computers and the server, but we have problems to get it to work on the other systems, I tried releasing and renewing the ipaddress and i got a DHCP error not beind able to connect to the server. I then tried resetting up the LAN connection with no luck there and finally tried to uninstall the protocol and reinstall it.

It's been a long time since I really worked around 2000, so I'm a little rusty.
The internet has worked on everycomputer in this room at one time but there old technician completly blew the lab and killed a HHD that we just replaced, we were sent in to clean up his work, and its a mess.

Just as a test, what happens if you manually enter in all the appropriate IP information.

Also could be the cable and port on the switch. Might try using known working ones.

Thanks alot for the help Bob. After having no luck last night I brought two of the lab computers back to our lab to fix them. I hooked it up and the internet worked just fine, not a problem at all and I didnt do a think. What would it be in that lab thats causing these computers not to find there DHCP server? Are there ip conflicts, or problems with the cables, they all seemed to be in line when i checked, I'll take a cable tester when i go check today.

A while ago I got the clean registry entries for a variety of Windows Operating systems.

To Remove the existing winsock2 registry entries (regardless of the OS) run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/xp_del_winsock.reg

To add Windows2000 clean entries back in again, run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/winsock_2k.reg

Then reboot.

===

But you might want to also double check the TCP/IP information. The only thing that should be different for the computers is the last octet of the actual IP address.

Yes, just change the last number in the IP address.

On a working computer, since you have Windows2000, Start / Run / IPCONFIG /All

This will show the IP address information you need to enter.
