It may be a coincidence, but ever since I installed Norton Internet Security 2006 on my system, the computer is much slower to respond. I have a router on my system as well. Could that have anything to do with this (the Norton firewall and the router that acts as a firewall)?

I am obviously concerned that I have been effected with a virus/worm/macro/whatever. One thing That I have noticed is that in my Task Manager-Processes I have four 'scvhost.exe' files. I know that at least one is necessary for Windows, but this file can also be used for Trogan.W32.Dasher.

Has anyone got any answers to speed things back up again? Thanks

Multiple svchost.exe entries running from the system32 folder are normal. Any other spelling or directory is not normal.

Open the Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Is any process there other than "system idle process" consuming high cpu time?

Is the slow response just concerning the web, or if you disconnect the modem and stay offline, is it slow there as well?

How much ram is installed on the system?

Post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Sorry for taking so long getting back to you but I was out of town for a
couple of days.

(1) I have the following processes using a good bit of CPU time:
* MSIMN.EXE - 9336
* CCAPP.EXE - 6556
* explorer.exe - 4032
* CCPROXY.EXE - 3488
These readings are after a system reboot.

(2) It doesn't seem to matter if I am disconnected from internet (DSL) or
not. The system still is slow.

(3) 256 RAM

(4) Hijack log file as of Mar 2 as follows:

All your svchost.exe entries are legit, and the scanlog is free of malware.

The numbers you posted for those processes are for memory usage, not cpu time, which is a percentage of 100 -- so I can't tell if a particular process is misbehaving.

You could probably rule out the router as an issue by connecting directly to the modem -- but since the problem exists even when not connected to the web -- that doesn't seem like a fruitful pursuit.

While we could go through a tedious process of installing a startup manager and having you disable all Symantec entries for a test -- it might be better to just uninstall it and see if things return to normal.

Did you uninstall Webroot? This seems to be an orphan entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

You might try checking and "fixing" it in the Scanlog if it is; if it remains after a reboot the registry would have to be edited directly to remove it.
