I have a Linksys wireless B-G WRT54GS. I hooked everything up and both laptops were able to connect to the internet. However when I security enabled the network, both laptops lost the connection. I was able to go to the wireless network icon on the laptop with the xp and type in the password and reconnect. However the laptop with windows 2000 and a proxim wireless card just displays no networks.

Where would I go to type in the password?

Also, I have a win 98 desktop I was going to directly plug in. But it is not seeing the network whether the security is enabled or disabled.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried the laptop on any other wireless networks? Could it simply be defective? Did you load the drivers for the Proxim card? Have you looked in Device Manager to see if it's displayed with no errors?

For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window:
--- or ---
For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

I did some more research and the exact model of the cardbus unit is a Proxim Orinoco 802.11b Wireless Network Adapter Card, Silver. It says it has WEP capabilities, but it is not detecting a network.

Yes, by password I mean I made up a key with 0-9 and a-f. I dont know where I could enter it in the laptop which is service pack 4.

The win98 works fine now. I had a regular linksys router before this and it wasn't working because I didn't have it plugged into slot 3 (which it was configured for on the previous router). So now the desktop works.

On my XP laptop I just click on the little corner icon (attached) and it brings up a screen. It detects 3 networks in range. I click on mine and get prompted to enter the key twice. Once I do, the internet works fine.

The win2k wont display any networks. But if I disable the WEP it automatically connects to the network. I would upgrade to XP but it is an old computer I just use for surfing the net/email.

Are you broadcasting the SSID? If so, you should be able to see the network the same as before. If you've disabled SSID broadcast, re-enable it. It's an anemic security measure, and as you can tell, just prevents you from using your network. Encryption is the only real security, and WPA or WPA2 is by far the best. How about telling us the make/model of the wireless adapter in use on the laptops? The W98 system is a separate issue, why don't we solve one issue first.

I am using WEP security and have SSID enabled. The wireless on the xp laptop is built in and is type G. The wireless on the 2000 laptop is type B and is a proxim card that is slid in the pcmia? slot (some thin thing on the side). I know it is about 2 years old, but it should still be able to handle WEP hopefully.

When you enabled security on the router, what did you enter at the workstation. From the first post you mentioned "password". But typically with WEP you need to enter in the wireless Key that is generated by the router. Is there an option for that on the Windows2000 computer. And just to be sure, what service pack do you have installed on that computer.

As far as the Win98 computer, did it ever work. Do you at least see lights on the network card and port on the router where it is connected.

Yes, I had the laptop running on the network fine until I put up WEP security. If it was unsecured it would just automatically connect. The card says it can handle 64-byte encryption and that is what I have the network set to. When I check the device manager everything comes up ok. I just cant understand why it doesnt detect a network. I wish it was an easy interface like the xp version.

Here is a pic of the manager
