My cousin has dug out an old laptop and now cannot log on. It is windows 2000 pro and just goes to welcome login screen asking for a username and password. Username has already got User written in but no password. He was sure there never was a password. Any ideas on how to by pass this screen???

First thing to try is to boot to Safe Mode (F8 after the manufacturer's splash screen). Try to log in to the Administrator account with a blank password. If you get in, reset/remove the password for the user in Control Panel => Users and Passwords => Advanced => Advanced => User => right-click username.
