I have an apple mac g3 connected through a switch to a server which is then connected to a router.
Weird connection i know! but it worked up until recently.
Now i can only get it to work when i turn the mac on, the restart the server (whihc acts as a proxy server) and then try and connect again from the mac but when i turn the mac off and back on again i have to restart the server!!
So is there anyway to stop the server cancelling the connection or is it safe to leave the mac on 24/7?
Server is Windows 2000 Small business server?
I dont know if i should have posted here but if not can a moderator move me to a suitable forum?

I guess my question would be does the 2k server have a setting that drops idle connections after a certain amount of time?

I kind of solved it!
I had a fiddle with the tools it has on the small business server. Administrative tools > DHCP and it said the server wasnt runni9ng correctly, so i reset the DHCP thing and suddenly the mac works?
Bit weird but its fixed....for the moment!

is the mac losing it's IP address? In other words, if it's getting an IP by DHCP is it being expired because of inactivity?

Ok UPDATE!
We left it on overnight as i thought this would solve it. Went on it this morning and agin it wouldnt connect displaying the same message.
If you go into the tcp/ip settings in the control panel and apple menu it still has its DHCP IP address but it wont connect to the interent or Outlook wont work.
This makes me think itstiming out or something along them lines.
Could this have anything to do with our Small Biz server have been set up to only allow one Mac and now we have the newly installed 2nd one, the old ones beiong kciked off?
Many anks

I don't recall the last time I shut down my Macs, excepting a restart after an OS update.
Can't help you on the other bits, sorry.
