I am about to embark on building my 1st website. I (my wife) have both of the above mentioned programs and lack the knowledge to use either. Does anyone know of any (free) online instruction sites that provide a step-by-step how-to? Also, which is easier to use? Dreamweaver III or FrontPage 2000? It is a small business site that I want to build.

WebDwarf is purported to be a good free WYSIWYG editor.

I was able to get DreamWeaver 4, Flash 5, Fireworks, and Freehand for $200. vs. $600. a year or two ago with a student discount.

The best way to start learning about webpage design is to understand how the basics work. Once you know that, then going to an app like Dreamweaver or Frontpage is easier because you will have the knowledge required to tweak your code.

Try this, it's a great "fundamentals" tutorial and the site is pretty comprehensive as well.

hope this helps,

R&R, I'm not sure if you are aware that the latest version of Dreamweaver is now Dreamweaver MX 2004, so the likelyhood's that you'll be able to get version 4 is very slim indeed, unless you have some very close buddies at Macromedia. Also, even with a student discount, the price tag is still rather... let's just say intimidating

However, I have seen Webdwarf recommended here a lot (I notice BillC is a fan ). Never tried it myself, but what have you got to lose, eh?

Wow, those programs are both very old. You should try downloading some freeware instead. :/

Since you're a student, like you said you'll beable to get a good discount on the software. With this if you're serious about doing web stuff then maybe you should get Dreamweaver MX. Good luck with your decision!

Well to be honest I'm not too familiar with FP cause I only use Dreamweaver, and that's only when I want to use a WYSIWYG editor. But still FP200 is old.. lol, maybe not that old but its old..
