I'm wanting to move FrontPage 2000 from my old pc (off line now) to the new one, but when it begins installation, I get an error message # 1933, which says "Windows Installer Service cannot update one or more protected Windows files", and shuts down. The old PC has Win98, and the newer one has XP; do you think there's a compatibility problem? I've been fooling w/ the thing most of the day and trying to find references to this problem online but not coming up with anything. If the answer is that I need to shell out the $$ for a newer version, at least I can stop beating my head against this brick wall.

Thanks for responding, Eddie.
I have the program on CD, along w/ Office.
I'm still working on it and had found the page you mention. I did what it said, and eventually moved all the dlls pertaining to fp to that folder, but no go. I hate to give up, but I may just have to continue using it on the old, offline pc and transfer my work to the newer one on CD.
A bit more trouble but do-able.

I hate to give up as well, so I have found this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q314812

Just look at the method 1 and 2 for now, but see if installing works on either, in order. Also, did you put the original files back?

There's a phrase I've never heard before 'I'm getting my ducks in a row first'. What does that mean?

Hopefully it'll go okay, and if you have a UPS, that should definatly help on those surges. Let us know if its still causing a problem, I hope it won't.

Also, its not my birthday until March 6. What made you think it was now?

Have you tried skipping that one, and gone to the next one:

Method 4: Edit the SOURCEPATH value in the Microsoft Windows Registry

Back up the Registry like this:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...d/199762382617

To start the Registry, go to Start \ Run, and type REGEDIT

Where it mentions the i386, go to Find Files via Start, and type it in.

Okay, lets see about this one

As you're moving to XP, try this:

Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Event Viewer.

Look at the date and time (you're looking for a X or!), and then rightclick and choose properties. What's in the Description?

If you don't have the tools, tightclick on the taskbar at the bottom. Properties \ Advanced. Tick the box, and they'll be in the Start \ Programs list.

Also, when the error comes up, can you see which file it is in the process of installing? You may not, so that's okay

Also, see if you can find this file:

FPMsiLogXXX.txt

XXX could change for each installation. I'm assuming it'll be FP, as its FrontPage you're installing.

So, just go to Find Files, and search the entire hardDrive for

*.txt

Ignore cookies, but there may be a few to look thru. It may/may not help on this issue.

Ok, the problem isn't with FrontPage but with Office 2000, which came installed on the pc. I did what you said, went into Event Viewer (not sure why I hadn't already looked there; I have a shortcut to it on my desktop because I look into it often.) Anyway, the list of Office files the installation needs is as long as my arm. I went into Add/Remove, and Office 2000 won't repair; this is just another in a string of glitches that I attribute to the hundreds of outages I mentioned earlier. For example, I recently bought a Wacom tablet, and what should have been a 5 minute install turned into an afternoon on the phone with a very patient Wacom tech support guy who could have bailed out on me but didn't and saw the thing through.
Sooooooooooooooo, I'm tired of fighting it; a reformat is overdue, especially now that I've got my Uninterruptible Power Supply. I'm getting my ducks in a row first and will tackle the reformat in a few days. I've only reformatted the old pc, after it wasn't my primary anymore, so there wasn't any pressure. I'll check back in here when I have everything, including FP, up and running.

(And Happy Birthday, Eddie

If the Frontpage is on the MS Office CD as one of the programs, like Word, Excel etc. , Have you tried doing a custom install where you choose only the programs and features you want to install? All of the MS Office CDs that I have used have been like this. Or am I misunderstanding where the program is located?

Being a Redneck from Northeastern Oklahoma, I know what you mean by getting your ducks in a row.

Howdy, Finwood (fellow redneck)
No, you understood that part fine, and yes I've tried custom install. I use my old pc as a guinea pig, so I went back and uninstalled fp, just to see if maybe my CD had deteriorated, but it installs slick as a whistle (bet you say that, too).
I've been fooling w/ this for over a week, and I'm pretty sure it's all pointing toward a reformat. Some people reformat about every 2 years, and it's been that long since I bought this pc.
Thanks for your input.

The Registry's not a bad place, but if you're woried about it, we'll leave it alone

My neighbours here totally different. If you can picture it, I live in a back-to-back terrace. Thats a neighbour on both sides, and at the back as well. 3 of them. The one on the left is in Scotland, one on right just moved in, and one at back plays this blasted piano for years, and mostly its something like chopsticks

I'll keep searching for new things for you. I have a few threads here I'm looking at more closely this weekend

Eddie,
You are so typical of this forum. I have only met intelligent, friendly, generous people here. Maybe PCOH should form their own nation and set the bar a little higher for the rest of the world.

I live just outside the city limits of a small, rural town of decent, hard working people who don't have time to do more than send emails on their PCs and who think defragging is high tech stuff.

Yes, if you happen to run across anything else on installing FP (not involving registry changes ) I would love to try them.
