I tested it and amazingly it found over 300 problems out of which 250+ were potential problems and were degrading performance
I don't believe that for one second. Registry clutter/fragments are a fact of life. A few hundred kilobytes of unused keys and values causes no noticeable performance impact on system operation. Even if the registry was massively bloated there would be little impact on the performance of anything other than exhaustive searches.

I suppose you'll also say that some fancy defrag utility also makes a huge performance difference.

Rather than worrying about "cleaning" my Registry, I take care to back it up. For this I use the excellect free application, ERUNT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ ERUNT Tutorial: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-on...runt/erunt.txt ERUNT can be set at install to automatically make a backup of the Registry at boot. One is left with but one file per day, and ERUNT saves but the most recent 30 files. Each backup file contains its own .exe, which, when run, returns the Registry to the state in which it was at the time of the file's creation. I do not feel comfortable operating my system without this excellent "safety net."

I really swear by this freeware. That's not quite true, it being freeware, I mean. What is required is great effort in its application. Anyway its name is HOK. It guarantees that by using it you will have no trouble whatsoever with registry problems. It has been around for a long time now.

Do try it.

Ben.

Hi, Mystic Eyes,
I think brolehd is saying he did not believe the results and that they were spurious? Well, that's how I read it?

Because I'm (a novice) in total agreement with you and the other regular contributors who have posted here saying (to paraphrase) "leave well alone".

I think it was Blues Harp that had as his signature at one time "If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is"

I thought about a complete image of the hard drive but after the Roxio "Backup MyPC 7" reported it would take 6 days to do the job, it was not difficult for me to smack the cancel button.

Hi MysticEyes,if you read my post carefully you will observe that I am also concentrating on the same fact as you are.I also know that however big the registry size is,there is no considerable decrease in computer's performance. The Registry Cleaners just point out to "problems" that are not even in registry because they know that 75% of people wouldn't even bother to check them out and just "fix" them. That's what I realized exactly after the format.Hope you can get my view a little more clearer now.....

Rather than worry about the registry at all, I use Acronis True Image to make an image backup of my entire system. Since the registry is only one component of a properly working system, it's much better to have a complete image. Anything bad that befalls my boot disk can be quickly dealt with using my automated weekly image backup.
