You don't need IE for Windows updates any longer and the older versions have always presented a security risk so why not try Opera and Firefox instead and see which one you prefer?;
http://www.opera.com/ Opera is proprietary software, ie: not 'open source', but it is free. It comes ready for use.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/ Firefox is open source and free. It does work in the basic format but there are lots of addons or extensions which allow it to do extra things. I only have it as a standby so the only extension I have is NoScript, which I think is essential.
Both browsers have excellent support systems and you could always post questions here if you did decide to try them and had problems.
