Is it possible to do a Clean Install Of Me using Upgrade CD. If so how? oh and is it possible to have Me on an NTFS Hard drive?

You can do a clean install of ME with an upgrade CD as follows:

1. You must have an earlier version of Windows on a CD (does not have to be installed).
Some ME upgrade discs were sold at a special low price -- these will only accept Windows 98 or 98SE as a qualifying product. Other ME upgrade discs will accept Win 95 or Win 98/98SE as qualifying products. The ME packaging will make this clear if you still have it.

2. Format the hard disk on which you intend to install ME so it is empty. (See NOTE at end of this post).

3. Insert the ME CD, log on to that drive letter. Type SETUP and press Enter.

4. When prompted, take out the ME CD and put in the Win98 CD so Windows Setup can check it. Then you can put the ME disc back after taking the Win98 one out.

5. Setup will continue.

NOTE: You CANNOT put Windows ME on an NTFS partition. it has to be FAT16 or FAT32. You can't convert NTFS to FAT32, but you can delete that partition with FDISK using a Windows 98 startup floppy disk. FDISK will see it as a "non-DOS Partition" which you should delete. Then, using FDISK again, create a new partition and answer 'YES' when asked if you want to enable large hard disk support. This will make it a FAT32 partition which is compatible with Windows 98 and Windows ME.

When new partition is created you must then use the FORMAT C: command to format it before attempting to install Windows ME on it, because Windows ME Setup cannot perform a format "on the fly" like XP can.

That is a bit incorrect use of the word. You don't really log onto the CD. You change to the drive letter of the CD.

For example, of you are at an A: prompt after booting the floppy, you would run FORMAT C: to format the C: drive.

The you would type in the drive letter assigned to the CD ROM. If it is D:, then you would just type in D: then press the enter key. This will change you to be on the D: drive.

But typically from there you would also need to change to the directory where the source files a location. On my copy of ME that would mean typing in CD WIN9X. Then you can run SETUP
