Hello! I am looking to purchase a hard drive. I have a windows 98 second edition and the hard drive that I had was a Seagate U8 ST313021A. I went up the the local computer shop uptown and the only hardrives they had to the lowest to offer at that gigabyte level was 80. But he told me to go to www.newegg.com and see. Well they have no 13 gigs to offer. Any good webs sites to visit? It doesnt have to be new, but refurbished will due. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!!

Unfortunately, you're not likely going to find a phone number to call to ask this question. You may not even find the information on the web. We're talking about a pretty old computer here. The best you can hope for is to buy a 40GB hard drive and hope it works.

If Bob Cerelli has anymore specific advice regarding his advice "Check with the manufacturer", that would be helpful.

will win98 support a 80gb hard drive. i know i replaced one 3 or 4 years ago and they said upto 40gb only.

thats about the time i got my win98se and it had a 30 gb they sent a 40gb and it went in with no problem.

You're going to have a very hard time finding a 13GB hard drive, and an even harder time finding a reliable one. They're very old and long out of warranty.

Sure it will. The limitation is the BIOS on the computer more than Win98 in regards to 80 gig drives.

HHHmmmmmm, I wonder if I ordered a 40 gigabyte harddrive it would work? I did find out the BIOS ID. It was 11/23/1999-AMD-75X-W977-6A6S2M49C. The BIOS type is Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

If the manufacturer says that the BIOS will handle it then get a 40 gig drive. And if that works might as well get one that spins a 7200 rpm's. Shouldn' tbe that much more for a reasonable increase in performance.

Why does it need to be a 13 gig one? That's not to say you want to get a 80 gig but why just 13?

If it is a BIOS issue, what is the largest hard drive you computer can recognize and do you have the latest BIOS updates for it.

No. $50 for a refurbished very old 13GB hard drive is a bad deal. Newegg is selling new 40GB drives with warranties for $40.
