Hello. Hope one of you whizzes can help me. A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2005 - and of course, it did not go smoothly. I had to go back in and uninstall Live Update seperately - I searched through the registry - deleted all signs of Norton and got rid of it in Application Data. I also deleted the free Zone Alarm and Spybot programs I had. Why you may ask? So I could download the free CA EZARMOR Suite that comes with my Road Runner account - and rid myself of paying yearly charges.

Here's what happened after uninstalling... I noticed right away that after about 5 mintues - consistently- I would lose internet access and could browse no more. I noticed particularly that when I tried to go back to my home page (which is ATT Worldnet) - that my computer was trying to connect with the numeric site not the "words" (www.att.net) - which it normally does. Very strange.

I have to reboot - then I get 5 more minutes - etc... etc.. etc...

I can get my email from outlook express without a problem.

I have been toying with the idea of reinstalling Norton Systemworks 2005 - just to see if the problem will fix itself - but I think that's rather ridiclous to pay $30 for another year when I have this free software to use.

Oh, also, I was able to download CA EZ Armour ANTIVIRUS - but the FIREWALL which "says" it is installing - never does.

So here I sit - stealing time on my husband's computer - since I would not have enough time to write this thread and send it in 5 minutes.

I read through the threads of a similiar saga from another help seeker on your site - and it doesn't look like finding a solution is promising for him ... perhaps I will have better luck? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Humbly - Cynthia

hahahahaha you nut,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I would like to see you reverse things back to the way they were before it all started..........if that includes removing RR then so be it.........lets go back a bit. I know that a removal of norton causes problems in some systems. I dont see it getting worse than it is. Remember system restore now works.....hahahhahahahaha.......... I Hope your smiling too!

There are nt supposed to be any risks. There is an undo. However Norton systemworks not uninstalling properly is another story. Go to start,,,,programs,,,,,accessories,,,,,system tools,,,,system restore. Choose a bold date before the problem occurred and see if I E will work. Then we will work on Norton.

Howdy Smokey (I mean Bandit) - First time you've heard that one, eh?

I assume I should UNINSTALL Computer Associates - EZ Trust AntiVirus first? It's the only thing that downloaded successfully after I uninstalled Norton. The EZ Trust Firewall would not run. This is the freebie that you get with Road Runner - which is the reason I uninstalled Norton in the first place.

Hey Cynthia,,,I need you to run the system restore tool. Do a restore and verify it does tell you your computer has been restored. Thats a good tool and I would like to know it does work......I have seen in the past where it was turned on and not working.

Hi Bandit. No, I have not tried System Restore. What does it do - and how do I do it? Any risks?

Hey Cynthia...I was having some of the same problems as you. Unfortunately, I ended up having to have my machine cleaned out and Windows reinstalled. Hopefully you won't have to do that...I just got too frustrated with it and ended up screwing up things even worse than before...LOL. Bandit has been a huge help for me and hopefully he can help you get back to where you need to be as well. I closed the thread containing my info. Good Luck to you with your troubles and I am sure Bandit will be able to help you out.

Hi Bandit. No, I do not have an ME disk - it was preinstalled on my Dell computer - I probably have a restore disk somewhere that Dell provided (should I dig it out?). Frankly, even the THOUGHT of reinstalling my operating system gives my hives... but am willing to entertain the idea.

I do have the Norton Systemworks 2005 disk at hand.

Perhaps you will dream the solution tonight :-)

Cynthia

2 and I dont like either. One of which is to reinstall ME the other norton and try for a proper removal which I am sure will require manual steps.....Honestly I d like some time to think about it before you try either, maybe I can come up with a better 3rd option. Do you have an ME disk? And do you have the norton disk?

On the bright side you now have system restore working....I would test it before doing another thing. Be sure.

Hello Cynthia,
Now that we know thats working reinstall norton...its a good guess....then we shall see if we can get it to uninstall properly....please let me know when you have that done. Do not uninstall norton after that please. Lets see if you can get IE to work after that.
I have a very long sleeve.......we will see.
