I went to help a friend who had several power surges that affected her PC. She has ME and when I boot the system, the background picture appears as well as the icons (My Computor, My files, etc). However, the Start button is gone. I can turn off the PC by doing a right click and then using the Shut Down button. can i just put the ME CD in and load over the existing ME to fix and bad files that might have been corrupted with the power surge ( it was the unexpected shut down from surge that caused the problem, not any damage from the surge). Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks
I just reformated her HD and reloaded ME and her programs as well as the files I saved--All is well. I was hoping to do a repair but, now at least it is clean system until she gets back on the internet.

Is the whole task bar gone? If so, it may have been dragged off the screen. Move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen. If it changes to a double arrow, drag it up.
Also check the top and sides of the screen.

Also, AVOID doing a reinstall if possible. It causes more problems than it fixes.
You won't be able to get windows updates, and explorer and media player will get set back to the original versions which may not be able to play the user's current files....
