I am trying to run ScanDisk (Standard scan selected) and after it runs for a while a screen pops up that reads:

Scan Disk Is Out of Memory
Your computer does not have enough available memory to complete this task. If any other programs are running, quit one or more of them, and then click OK.

FYI, I did not have any other programs opened, and in msconfig, under the Startup tab, the only items currently checked are:
* ScanRegistry
* TaskMonitor
* SystemTray
* LoadPowerProfile

My computer has 640 MB SD RAM
OS: Windows 98SE
My Knowledge Level: Beginner

As a side note, in the HELP section it reads:
Occasionally ScanDisk cannot repair errors while Windows 98 is running. Follow this procedure to continue checking for errors on your disk.

To repair errors that ScanDisk cannot repair while Windows is running

1 In ScanDisk, click Cancel.
2 Print or write down these instructions.
3 Insert your Windows startup disk in your floppy disk drive.
4 Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
5 Click Restart The Computer, and then click OK.
6 At the command prompt, type the following:

scandisk x:
For x, substitute the letter of the drive you were just checking.

7 If ScanDisk prompts you to specify whether you want to check the host drive for errors, press Y.
8 When ScanDisk is finished, remove the startup disk, and then restart your computer.

Note

if you do not have a startup disk, click here and then click Create Disk.

I have a floppy disc for Windows 98 Second Edition, called Boot Disk, inserted it in my a: drive, and followed the above instructions; but upon reboot, my computer ignored it, and continued to boot up as if the disk was not in the drive. After trying a couple times, I therefore just opened the a: drive from the desktop, clicked on Command- a window titled MS-DOS Prompt popped up with a black background- then I typed in scandisk c: The scan started again but I ended up with the "ScanDisk Is Out of Memory" message again.

I am at a loss as what to do to get ScanDisk to complete a full scan. Any suggestions as to how solve this problem?

I presume that this is the first time that you have tried running a Scandisk on this drive?

The error is caused by the cluster size being invalid in relation to the size of the partition. It generally happens if you use a ghostlike app to clone a smaller disk onto a larger one, and the cluster size of the smaller one is carried over.

Options are to recreate and reload the partition, or use a program like Partition Magic to resize the clusters.

WDC Knowledge Base

To be able to boot from the floppy, the A: drive must be before the C: drive in the BIOS.

Change this, boot to the A: drive and then run Scandisk. When you ran it from the Command prompt, it was still running under Windows.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time to open the Close Program window. Select an entry and then click End Task. Repeat the steps until everything is gone, except for Explorer and Systray. Now trying running Scandisk.

If that doesn't work, restart the computer in safe mode and then run it.

FYI, I did not have any other programs opened, and in msconfig, under the Startup tab, the only items currently checked are:
* ScanRegistry
* TaskMonitor
* SystemTray
* LoadPowerProfile

The only ones that need to be checked are:
ScanRegistry
SystemTray

You can uncheck the others.

Why is there no antivirus program checked and running in the background?

Howdy Football-Fan...

How much free space does your hard drive have?

I know sometimes you will get that error, if there isn't enough free space to write the files to...
