I have this win98 machine that had a failed HD. Decided to install SCSI drive with SCSI adapter. THe scsi hd has been formatted. Set the jumper settings; tried to boot from scsi cd-rom (with drivers) but never could get past setup. Would tell me that my hd was not functional or that I had no hd installed; or I needed special device drivers for the hd. If I download the drivers for the hd will I be prompted to install floppy disk or is that the next step I need to take. The scsi drive is 9.2 gb. Wanting to install 4 of them but can't even get one to be recognized.

Check the specifications of your SCSI Adapter card to see if it supports the attached SCSI drives being bootable system drives. It may only support using the drives a secondary devices and still require the use of a bootable system HD attached directly to the motherboard.

The manufacturer of the scsi drive could not tell me if I need special drivers for the scsi drive to make it bootable. Would it be that I need a IDE drive installed first as my primary drive and the scsi drives (s) as slave to install win98se?

The adapter does support the HDD to be bootable. I went into the controller's bios and made the drive the bootable drive but at windows setup I still got the same message; either my hard drive is not functioning or I need special device drivers. I'm waiting on reply from the manufacturer of the scsi drive to see if I need special software to make this drive bootable.

Thanks CWWOZNIAK for the info! I will try an ide drive connected to the motherboard and see if that works. I have an HDD from another computer. Do I have to do anything other than connecting to motherboard and powering up the hd? I'm new at this so please overlook these beginner's questions.

That would be my first guess. The adapter card itself may support making the SCSI drive bootable but the BIOS on the motherboard may only support booting from a drive connected directly to the motherboard.

I finally was able to install win98 on my computer with an ide drive. I don't know what to do with the scsi drives. I have the jumper settings set and the bios recognizes the drive. The scsi adapter is set at default. The computer boots fine to win98 using the ide drive. Anyone with idea!
