Been trying to get my wireless card to work and haven't had any luck so far =/.

I am using the beta drives from netgear, but have also tried the lastest XP drivers as well with no luck.

This is the error I get:

Any suggestion would be great =D!

I just spent 2 hours working out the kinks with this dreaded piece of hardware and since half an hour of that was sifting through threads online, I thought I would do my part and share the solution (since Netgear obviously has no interest in getting their hardware working themselves). I'll be spamming this to all the threads I can find through Google, in the hope that it will help someone at some point.

The key is that the Netgear WN311T PCI card (sorry about that, I have to give the full name so it will rank highly in search results) uses a chipset by a manufacturer called Marvell. The forums are replete with users experiencing problems with the official Netgear drivers, and in every few threads there's a hint that there are Marvell drivers that work.

I was able to find and download version 1.0.1.7 (read_me.txt dated 03/09/2007) of these drivers, but before I had the chance to install them something hit me. When I first installed the Netgear WN311T PCI card everything was working fine until I installed Netgear's Vista drivers with their "Smart Wizard." At that point I started getting the "Error 10: Device cannot start" that everyone else is getting. Well, it turns out that the initial drivers which worked were the ones to use, and that the version on Windows Update is newer, 1.0.2.0 dated 8/15/2007.

Even if you had downloaded these drivers at some point they won't show up as compatible hardware once the Smart Wizard takes control of your system, so you need to:

1. Go to the non-working driver in Device Manager
2. Right click, select Properties
3. Go to the Driver tab
4. click Update Driver
5. Search automatically
6. Search online

The Marvell drivers will show up now, even if you have the Netgear ones already installed. Select them (they were called "RangeMax Next Wireless-N Notebook Adapter" for me) and install them. You'll still get that "Error 10," but a reboot should get rid of it and the card should work in Vista now!

I went the extra step and changed the driver to another which was downloaded concurrently during the online search, called "Marvell TOPDOG (TM) 802.11n Wireless (CB82)." I'd bet a $100 bill that CB82 is the chipset in the WN311T. I would guess that the two drivers are identical (which makes sense since the chipset is identical), and some more research suggests that the notebook drivers were just packaged for a certain model Gateway notebook.

Enjoy, and spread the love. Oh, and Google Ron Paul.

Have you found a resolution to your driver issue? I have the same problem with not being able to install the wn311t driver on Vista. The tech support teams at Netgear and Dell have no solution when the driver install fails (multiple calls to each). The techs use the same steps each time I have called and I can do it in my sleep at this point.

Sorry I should have explained this a little better. I've tried their installers (the auto install) with no luck at all. In a folder on my desktop, I have the XP drivers, as well as the 32bit and 64bit Vista drivers. From device manager I've tried browsing to the drivers manually instead of using the auto install. Before trying each drive, I'd delete the device and all files associated with it. Each time yielded the same result shown in the screen shot above.

If I read your post incorrectly, I apologize, but I think I'd already tried what you mentioned.

I still have no figured out this issue =/. Netgear tech support is utterly useless. They tried having me change settings in IE to fix the problem and renewing my IP? ....

I've tried their installed. Tried x86 drives, 64bit drivers, XP x86 drivers. It just won't work =/. And the device works, the is no second guess about that. My machine is duel boot and it works flawlessly in XP.

Anyone have any more suggestions? Or has anyone found a solution to this?
