I am trying to load Vista onto a clean sata hardrive. it is a 74 gig raptor.

my mobo is a asus a7n8xe

shortly into the install vista begins to ask for drivers for a drive and shows a dialog box where
all available drives it found should be listed but in my case, none are.

how do i get vista to see this hardrive for the install?

Wow this seems really bizarre that a canon driver install would create such a problem as to destroy the OS...not sure where to go but reformat then.

Actually it sounds like something is wrong with the Raptor as there really is no reason it should not be seen. Are you certain that sata is enabled in the bios? Does the bios show the drive?

Now that you have it running on IDE, you can simply load the drivers before doing the clone image operation.

I managed to get vista running and somewhat stable for several days on the IDE drive.

After all of the microsoft updates for Vista were in place I cloned the IDE drive to the raptor sata drive with acronis 10.

Included in the Microsoft updates for vista was an update for the 3112 sata controler.

I then removed the IDE drive and attempted to let it boot from the newly cloned raptor drive. ( yes, I know how to configure for boot devices in bios )

Vista was still not able to see the raptor sata drive and boot from it

Did you restore to the Raptor drive restoring the entire drive which checks the image file and the mbr?

Hard to believe that Vista would not recognize sata drives...but good idea to install sata driver on ide drive then create image file and restore it!

The drive shows in the bios. While there is not any specific mention of the term SATA in the bios there is settings to enable for SCSI devices which is what controlled that drive when I was running windows XP on it.

Download the Raptor drivers from http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n
If you don't have a floppy drive there are ways to emulate the A:drive.

Love my life!!

I would have expected this type of trouble with an upgrade install but this is not an upgrade, It is a clean install................
