i built a vista machine a few weeks ago and everything was working fine....until today my dvd rom wasnt reading a disk so i turned on the usb dvd burner and and it wouldnt read on there either.....so i rebooted and tried a different disc, they didnt read either...so i checked device manager and they had the error icon on it....so i uninstalled them and rescanned and vista kept trying to install the drivers but they kept failing everytime i tried....i can still boot windows from the drive so it has to be a windows issue no? please help.

hey, i did a search on google and found someone who had a similair problem and the solution was pretty dead on to what you suggested except that it was the lower filters that cured it. thanks problem solved

Man, I thought that was gonna work for sure....however it did the same thing, driver failed to load thanks though. what was it that i deleted anyway?

Ah, I usually do lowerfilters too - had been advised that one was unnecessary. It's generally known as the itunes fix!
