CDRW: General CD-burning troubleshooting steps
(Microsoft Windows XP->System issue)
Check Built-in CD burning feature
=====================
1. Right-click the file you would like to burn, click Send To, and then click Name or Drive Letter of your CD-RW drive.
2. Right-click the CD-RW drive, and then click Write these files to CD.

Check IMAPI (Image Mastering Applications Programming Interface) service
=====================
1. Click Start, Run, type: SERVICES.MSC and press Enter.
2. Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, make sure the Startup type is "Automatic" and the Service status is "Started". If the Service status is "Stopped", click "Start".
3. Click OK to confirm.
Enable CD Recording
=====================
1. Click Start and click My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD-RW drive and click Properties.
If you see a Recording tab next to the Sharing tab, then Windows XP successfully recognize this device as a CD-RW device. If not, Windows XP fails to recognize it as a CD-RW, so you cannot write files on it. If you have the Recording tab, please make sure "Enable CD Recording on this device" is selected.
If you cannot find the "Recording" tab, please perform the following steps to enable it:
1. Click "Start"->"Run", type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click "OK".
2. Navigate to the following key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{GUID}]
3. Right click on "Drives", click "Export"; please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup.
Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key.
GUID is a series of numbers and letters like 50084261-8aa6-11d5-bccc-806d6172696f.
4. Right-click the Drive Type entry in the right pane and click Modify.
5. Change the value to 2 and click OK.
6. Close Registry Editor.
7. Restart your computer.
Enable PIO (Programmed Input/Output) mode
=====================
1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type in "DEVMGMT.MSC" and press "Enter".
2. In the Device Manager, expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and right click "Secondary IDE channel".
3. Choose "Properties", check the Device Status and click "Advanced Settings".
4. Change the transfer mode of Device 0 and Device 1 as "PIO only".
Remove third-party CD-burning software
=====================
1. Please go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
2. Remove all the third-party CD-burning software.
Delete filter driver
=====================
1. Click "Start"->"Run", type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click "OK".
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Right click on "Class", click "Export"; please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup.
Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key.
4. Highlight this key, on the right pane, check if the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.
Reinstall CD-RW drive
=====================
1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter".
2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives".
3. Right click your CD-RW Drive, and click "Uninstall".
4. Restart the computer.
Lower the burning speed in Media Player
======================================
1. In Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu.
2. Click the Devices tab, and then double-click the name of the CD-R or CD-RW drive you are using.
3. Click the Recording tab, and then select a write speed that is slower or is the slowest available speed.
4. Click OK, and then click OK.
Lower the burning speed in the Recording tab
======================================
1. Right click the CD-RW drive and choose Properties.
2. Click the Recording tab.
3. Choose a lower speed instead of fastest, such as 18X or even 8X.
